Mann STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
Horace Mann Middle School has been a leader in piloting the Next Generation Science Standards. California adopted the NGSS standards in 2013. San Diego Unified was one of ten school districts in the state to be selected for the Early Implementation Initiative. The Implementation Team is currently in the process of developing a statewide rollout model.
Mann Science Department Chair, Dr. Rachael Tarshes is a member of the district's Core Leadership Team. Starting in sixth grade, Mann students learn through the three dimensions of the NGSS standards which emphasize the engineering of solutions and the investigation of problems. Students analyze data, conduct design cycles, integrate technology and use a multitude of communication skills to collaboratively tackle real-world issues. These practices and skills are preparing Mann students for college and career readiness.
